Help Afghan Refugees

In partnership with Lutheran Social Services, First Baptist is supporting an Afghan family seeking refuge in the U.S. by setting up their apartment here in DC. To donate household items and furnishings, click the button below.

AFTER signing up for specific items, donations can be brought to the church narthex.

To volunteer to set-up the apartment or to lend a truck to transport items and furniture, click the same button below.

DETAILS

  • Our church has entered an exciting partnership with the Lutheran Social Services (LSS) Good Neighbor Program in the Capitol Region to set up an apartment for an Afghan Refugee Family in the DC area in June.

  • There is a need for very gently used furniture, (LSS is strict about gently used condition) table and chairs, dressers, bedroom sets, dishes, rugs, toys, clothing, décor and food for the pantry to get started.

  • We will need volunteers to organize donations at the church, load a truck or trucks, and decorate and set up the apartment. We need volunteers with trucks for transport.

  • We have a general idea about the family now—two parents and 4 children/teens. When we are ready with most items, we will be in contact with LSS during the first week of June and will be given the details about the family’s ages and clothing sizes.

  • We will then have one week to gather the last items before being given the keys! Furniture will be moved in on Friday, June 24 and the family will move in on Saturday, June 25.

  • Please sign up to donate items or to volunteer here

  • If there is not a slot available or your item isn’t listed as an option, please email Susan or Linda (co- chairs) at the email listed below. There may be additional need.

  • After signing up to donate items—please send a picture of the item to both Susan and Linda, so we can keep track of the items. Items can either be dropped off at the church or for larger furniture items, be brought to the apartment on move-in day.

Items can be dropped off beginning Monday, May 15.
Drop off times at the church will be: Mon-Thurs, 8:30-4 and Sunday, right after the service. More info will be available as we get closer to May 15.

The first set of volunteers we will need will be organizers on Wednesdays, late afternoon, for May 18th, 25th and June 1st and 8th. We will get in touch with you about your preference after you sign-up. We look forward to working with everyone on this wonderful project! Please contact the chairs for this project with any questions, Susan Lucas (lucas100@comcast.net) and Linda Salmon (lfsalmon@verizon.net).

"Faith Forty" Sundays @9:40am

FBC and Friends Packed 10,000 Meals to Feed the Hungry on June 5 (Pentecost Sunday)

First Baptist gathered after worship on June 5 in the fellowship hall to pack 10,000 meals for Rise Against Hunger.

Volunteers packed meals immediately following worship from 12:30-2:30pm. Childcare was provided for infants and preschoolers. Children as young as 4 years old were welcome to help with meal packing.

Many thanks to all who have given financially to support this endeavor. We surpassed our goal of $3,553!

Youth and Children's Leadership Announcement

Dear FBC Family:

One of the deepest joys in Christian community is watching the young ones in our midst grow up—physically, mentally, and spiritually. It is every church’s sacred responsibility to ensure the spiritual nurture of children and teenagers.  First Baptist DC has been blessed for many years with adults who were called to this work and whose prayers, time and energy made all the difference in the lives of our children and youth.

I’m writing to the congregation to ask for your blessing of a recommendation at the upcoming Congregational Meeting regarding youth leadership and to let you know of a positive development regarding children’s leadership.

Youth Leadership:

One year ago, FBC needed someone to come alongside the middle schoolers and high schoolers in our congregation. Jennifer Campbell readily responded to this need and has been a faithful, wise, creative presence with them, even as she’s continued to fulfill her staff roles with communications and the Give It Forward capital campaign.

Since March of 2021, Jennifer:

  • Continues to serve as leader of Youth Faith Formation Hour on Sundays

  • Brought FBC youth to Passport Camp

  • Initiated the making of Thanksgiving candy bags for Drake residents

  • Formed a partnership with the youth group at McLean Baptist Church

  • Has led monthly youth outings (National Zoo, FBC building tours & pizza, fall gathering at Ellen Parkhurst’s, Christmas party at The Harper, snow tubing, bowling, lock-in at McLean Baptist)

At the Annual Meeting on May 1, the Personnel Committee and I will ask the congregation to bless Jennifer’s ministry already-in-progress by affirming her as FBC’s Minister to Youth and Families. Please take a moment to read Jennifer’s resume and you’ll see that Jennifer brings considerable ministry experience to First Baptist.

Children’s Leadership:

In January 2022, Carolyn Roebuck became FBC’s Interim Minister to Children and Families. The initial plan was for Carolyn to serve for several months while FBC initiated a search for a permanent children’s minister. However, as we’ve been preparing the spending plan for the 2022-23 fiscal year, FBC’s finance and personnel teams believe it wise to allow the congregation more time to emerge from pandemic realities before initiating that search.

I’m happy to share that Carolyn Roebuck has agreed to stay on as Interim Minister to Children and Families until summer of 2023. Carolyn has assembled a marvelous Sunday morning team of Bible teachers and caregivers, and loves ministering to FBC’s children and families.

God is doing a beautiful work in this beloved community of faith—through gifted, wise, generous laypeople and caring, committed pastors and staff. This is cause for celebration.

Peace and grace,

Pastor Julie

WINTER FORUM: Dementia Through the Lens of Grace with Bishop Kenneth Carder

From his experience as his late wife’s caregiver, his study of dementia, his role as a seminary professor, and his experience as volunteer chaplain of a memory care facility, Methodist Bishop Kenneth Carder authored the book, Ministry with the Forgotten: Dementia Through a Spiritual Lens. This session focused on how our faith that enables us to live with courage and hope, and ways in which the church can minister to people affected by dementia.

Full to the Brim: An Expansive Lent

Full to the Brim: An Expansive Lent

If love is our beginning, how can we live our lives led by love's promises? The Gospel texts during Lent are filled with parables and promises of God’s abundant and expansive grace: Jesus as a mother hen, a prodigal son welcomed home, a fig tree nurtured with care and hope, precious oil poured out lovingly and freely, stones shouting out with praise. These sacred texts are brimming with a gospel of grace. We’ve done nothing to deserve or earn this grace, and yet, like water, it spills over, touching everything in its path.

You can worship online, in real-time at noon, or you can access the service at a time that is convenient for you. Supplies for imposing your own ashes will be made available in person and by mail this week. Requests to be added to our mailing list can be emailed to office@firstbaptistdc.org.

Laments and Intercessions for the World

Dear FBC Family,

This is a sad and sobering moment for our world. Know that I am praying for you as you absorb the painful news of the invasion of Ukraine. In worship this Sunday we will observe an extended prayer time of Laments and Intercessions for the World. If your heart, like mine, is full of grief at the violence and turmoil, I believe Sunday’s worship will bring comfort.

In the meantime, I want to offer here Nan C. Merrill’s adaptation of a well-known psalm. This psalm, particularly this translation, has been a guide for me at times when I’ve needed to be reminded that God is, indeed, a loving presence in times of trouble.

Psalm 46

The Beloved is our refuge and our strength,
a loving presence in times of trouble.

Therefore we will not fear though the earth should change,
though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea;
though its waters roar and foam,
though the mountains tremble with its tumult…

The nations may be at war,
countries left in ruins,
yet is the Voice of the Almighty heard, melting hearts of stone.

The Beloved is with us, the infinite Heart of Love.

Come, behold the works of the Beloved,
how love does reign even in humanity’s desolation.
For the Beloved makes wars to cease,
breaking through the barriers of fear,
shattering the greedy and oppressors,
refining hearts of iron!

Be still and know that I am Love.
I am exalted among the nations,
I am exalted in the earth!

The One who knows all hearts is with us;
The Beloved is our refuge and our strength.

~ From Psalms for Praying © 2007 Nan C. Merrill

Epiphany Sermon Series: Beginning with Joy

BEGINNING WITH JOY

The stories from early in Jesus’ life and ministry give us glimpses of a meaningful, joyful life. An alternative to the “try harder” or “do better” mentality common at the beginning of a new year with its emphasis on resolutions and plans, this series helps us find the joy already present in our lives, grounded in God’s continuous presence.

Candlelight Carols: Sunday, Dec. 12 at 4pm (In-Person)

This year our special offering during Candlelight Carols will go to the Latin American Youth Center. The center will be providing Christmas dinners to families like they did for Thanksgiving. A gift of $25 will cover a turkey and fixings such as gravy, cranberry sauce and mashed potatoes.

We will also be collecting coats, scarves, hats and gloves in the narthex for the Latin American Youth Center Winter Clothing Drive.

Let your friends know you are attending on Facebook.

Christmas Eve At First Baptist • Cancelled

Christmas Eve Service Canceled

While we are all disappointed about not being able to worship together (in-person or online) on Christmas Eve, keeping our community safe is of the utmost importance. This news means your plans may change. As you adjust and adapt, we encourage you to find ways to set aside a few moments on Christmas Eve to read the Christmas story from Luke 2, sing a carol, or worship online with a faith community of your choosing.

Our staff is currently revising plans for in-person activities at the start of the new year. We will communicate those details once they are solidified.

May the peace, joy and love of the Christ Child fill your hearts as you observe Christmas in ways that mean the most to you and your loved ones.

Peace,

Pastor Joel

Blue Christmas: Wednesday, Dec. 15 at 7pm (In-Person)

For many people, the approaching Christmas holiday doesn't bring with it the joy and happiness advertised on television or in greeting cards. For those facing the holidays after the death of a loved one or after a divorce, a miscarriage, the loss of a job, or some other emotional trauma, Christmas can be the hardest season of all. Consider inviting and accompanying someone you know who is in need of hope and comfort.

Return to Worship at First Baptist

Features of the return:

  • All worshipers will enter the building at the 16th Street entrance (the only entrance available during the next phase of construction).

  • Those using the FBC parking garage will take the elevator that leads to The Drake apartment lobby, then use sidewalk along O Street to the sanctuary entrance on 16th Street. FBC Greeters will be present to welcome and give direction.

  • At least one of our new elevators will be operational when we return. The ramp leading to the sanctuary entrance has been widened and will be available for those using wheelchairs.

Sunday morning safety measures include:

  • Masks required inside the building at all times

  • Contact tracing upon entering the building

  • Practice of social distancing

  • Enhanced cleaning of Sanctuary and other public spaces each week

Church-wide Texting System

We now have a new way for everyone to connect to the church whether you worship in-person or online. It's simple. All you do is text a phrase (see below) to 94000. You will then be promoted to fill out a few simple questions.

If you are new to First Baptist: Text “CONNECTFBCDC” to 94000

To send a prayer request: Text “PRAYERFBCDC” to 94000.
Respond to the prompts, including whether the request is to be held confidentially by our pastoral staff or whether you would like this to be included in our churchwide prayer list.

To check-in to follow COVID safety protocols: Text “CHECKINFBCDC” to 94000 and respond to the prompts.
