Letter to the Congregation from Pastor Charlie

Charlie Photo.jpg

Dear treasured brothers and sisters in Christ,

It is with sadness that I tell you that my and Cindy’s season here with you in Washington is coming to an end. We all knew that our time here would be limited, and it’s become clear to both Cindy and me that God is calling us back to the Southwest. Since moving here in late 2016, another grandchild has arrived. In addition, both of our daughters and their families now live in the Dallas suburb of Plano. It’s time for us to move nearer to them and give them what support we can.

Julie and I and our church leaders have determined that I will remain your Executive Pastor until July 1, the end of our budget year. This will give time for church leadership to make decisions and arrangements about what will come next.

Please know that I continue to love the privilege of being one of your pastors. I love the work I do. I love those with whom I get to do it. I love living in this wonderful city. It has all been, and continues to be, a holy privilege and I will always consider my time here to be one of God’s most precious gifts. While I wish that our tenure here could be longer, the time has come for us to live nearer to our family. We hope you will understand and continue to love and support us as you always have. Know that we will do the same for you, you dear people who call yourselves The First Baptist Church of the City of Washington, D.C.

In love and gratitude,

Charlie Fuller, Executive Pastor

Dear FBC family:

I join you in feelings of sadness at Charlie and Cindy’s news. Charlie shared their discernment with me some weeks ago, so I’ve had longer to let the news fully arrive in my mind and heart. While I would have loved serving alongside Charlie for years to come, I recognize that he and Cindy are following God’s call in this season of their lives, and of course I fully support them in their desire to be closer to their family.

In the fall of 2016, God gave a significant gift to First Baptist Church when we invited Charlie to become FBC’s very first Executive Pastor. Given the complex nature of FBC’s operational systems and structures, the church determined that we needed a staff leader to guide these areas in order to allow more of our congregation and pastors to focus on our Christ-centered mission as a church.

During the past two-plus years, Charlie has exceeded every one of my highest hopes for this position. His wise, patient, keen leadership, coupled with his caring pastor’s heart, have helped First Baptist to turn a number of crucial corners operationally. Many of our systems are healthier today as a direct result of Charlie’s leadership, and more people feel connected to God and this church family because of his love and care. For all of this I say, thanks be to God.

Be assured that our gifted lay leaders in each of the operational areas for which Charlie is responsible—finance, personnel and facilities—are already discussing next steps. They and I will keep the congregation informed all along the way as we walk together into God’s good future.

In the meantime, please join me in blessing our dear brother and sister in Christ. Charlie and Cindy, we love and appreciate you!

Peace and Grace,

Pastor Julie

Dear brothers and sisters,

It has been said one characteristic of a true leader is to prepare the organization for their departure. On that basis alone, Pastor Charlie will be reckoned among the great leaders of the First Baptist of the City of Washington D.C. for he has surely prepared us well for the coming days when we must move forward without him. At this point I want to assure the congregation about several things:

  • The leadership of First Baptist Church is committed to following through on the upgrades and improvements Pastor Charlie has been supporting since he joined us.

  • The leadership is assembling a search committee to call a new Executive Pastor; we will soon ask the congregation to affirm and bless the committee.

  • We will hire an interim Executive Pastor/Chief of Staff to carry on with the work Pastor Charlie has been doing for us until the search committee completes its work.

  • Pastor Charlie will be with us through the end of June to help facilitate a smooth transition.

I encourage everyone in the congregation to pray for Charlie and Cindy as they respond to this new call for their lives. We praise God for their time with us and the gifts they have shared.

New Music CD--Unique and Sacred: Original Compositions and Arrangements by Dr. Lon Schreiber with Debbi Miller, Soprano

Beginning this Sunday (3/3), we are pleased to make available for purchase a new music CD, Unique and Sacred. Dr. Lon Schreiber has been writing sacred music for more than 60 years and soprano Debbi Miller has long cherished the dream of recording his soprano solo pieces to preserve that portion of his beautiful body of work for posterity. Together they realized this dream last August, recording here in the sanctuary of FBC, and creating a CD of eight inspirational songs. Lon's specialty is to use very familiar texts and/or melodies, and re-imagine them in his own unique style. Cost: $10. All proceeds will benefit the National Center for Children and Families (NCCF) which creates healthy living environments for vulnerable children, youth and families. CDs may be purchased in the Narthex after worship, in Fellowship Hall during the potluck, and here

Ash Wednesday is March 6

Ash Wed 2019.png

“Remember you are dust, and to dust you shall return” (Gen. 3:19). For nearly a thousand years, these words have been spoken to believers as the sign of the cross is traced on their foreheads with ashes, a sign of our mortality and repentance. Join us March 6th at 7pm for the Ash Wednesday worship service (Dinner at 6pm, catered by Chef Laval). Can’t make it to the evening service? Pastor Alyssa will offer ashes on the front steps of the church (16th Street) that morning from 8am until 10am.

Snow Advisory: FBC Facilities Closed Sunday, January 13; Online Gathering Live at 11am

Dear FBC Family:

Our pastoral staff, deacon chair, moderator and other church leaders have been in communication this afternoon and we have made the decision to cancel all Sunday activities for tomorrow, January 13. Up until a few hours ago, when only 1-3 inches of snow were predicted, the plan was to meet for worship as usual. However, now that the forecast calls for greater amounts of snow, and because some of our Sunday support staff live beyond the District, we feel it best to suspend Sunday activities and land on the side of safety.

Tomorrow morning at 11am, I will lead a brief devotional gathering on Facebook Live from our home here in Brookland. Join us! (You don't have to have a Facebook account to watch.) If you’re not familiar with Facebook Live:

  1. Tomorrow at 11am, if you have a Facebook (FB) account, go on FB and search for First Baptist Church of the City of Washington, DC. (If you don't have a FB account, go to this URL which will take you to our FB page:
    https://www.facebook.com/firstbaptistdc/

  2. On the left side of our Facebook page you’ll see a list of options. Click the “Videos” button. The live session begins at 11am.

During our snow-day worship gathering, in addition to prayers, Scripture and a poem or two, I invite you to email me between now and tomorrow morning with a personal gratitude statement (“I feel grateful for…”) or a brief word about where you have felt God’s presence lately. I will read your statements during the Facebook Live session. (Please let me know if it’s okay to mention your first name…and even if you can't join us tomorrow on Facebook, I’d still love to read your gratitude statement or story of God’s presence.) jpr@firstbaptistdc.org

In the meantime, as the snow begins to fall, I offer this winter poem by Frederick Buechner:

Sudden Snow

You wake up on a winter morning
and pull up the shade, and what lay there
the evening before is no longer there—
the sodden gray yard,
the dog droppings,
the tire tracks in the frozen mud,
the broken lawn chair you forgot to take in last fall.

All this has disappeared overnight, and what
you look out on is not the snow of Narnia
but the snow of home, which is no less
shimmering and white as it falls.

The earth is covered with it, and it is falling still
in silence so deep that you can hear its silence.
It is snow to be shoveled,
to make driving even worse than usual,
snow to be joked about and cursed at,
but unless the child in you is entirely dead,
it is snow, too, that can make the heart beat faster
when it catches you by surprise that way,
before your defenses are up.

It is snow that can awaken memories of things
more wonderful than anything you ever knew
or dreamed.

Stay warm and be safe, friends. Savor the quiet beauty falling all around you. And be mindful of those who are seeking warmth and shelter tonight.

In peace,

Julie Full Sig 2.png

Worship Moved to Fellowship Hall Tomorrow 10/28/18

old-boiler.png

Dear Church Family: Sometimes God invites us to change our plans. Our church boilers have staged a rebellion, leaving us without a way to heat our facilities this weekend (10/28). For this reason we are moving our worship service tomorrow to Fellowship Hall which will be warmer than the sanctuary.

Everyone is invited to dress warmly and comfortably and to experience the simple joy of family-style worship around tables, hot coffee or tea in hand. Think of this as a holy adventure.

And if you’re traveling from Virginia, please plan accordingly as the Marine Corps Marathon will be taking place during your commute.

Peace and grace…
